Serious Composer

Not To Be Taken Too Seriously

About This Blog

The moniker of “Serious Composer” is a joke. ASCAP classifies music by its composer members into one of a small number of very broad categories. One of these is the “Concert” category, like modern chamber music, works for concert band, orchestra, etc. When you register a piece of music with ASCAP and you classify it as being in the Concert genre, they deem that music to be “Serious” in some other weird section of classification they have. When I saw this, I thought it was far too hilarious to not exploit for comedic purposes.

Am I committed to what I do? Do I work hard? Of course, but the moment I start taking myself too seriously, I’ve lost my spark. So, I try to remind myself of that as frequently as possible.
